Pro304 — Chartfields: Navigating Financial Transactions At UF
A 45-minute course on UF's ChartFields — the backbone of the university's accounting system — that earned an NPS of 88 and a place in the PRO3 Fiscal Certification.
Course DesignThe Problem
Staff who process financial transactions needed to understand ChartFields — the data fields that tell the story of every transaction — but the concept is abstract and easy to get wrong.
Design Story
Building on the Color of Money course, I created the next course in the fiscal-certification track, focused on the accounting structure behind the funds.
Complexity
ChartFields are technical and interdependent; learners needed both a clear mental model and practical “how do I enter this correctly” guidance.
The Designed Solution
A 45-minute course covering the core “Basic Six” ChartFields, the extended string, transactions in practice, and reconciliation — with mini-quizzes throughout and an 80%-to-pass final assessment.
Design Decisions
- Sequenced from “what is a ChartField” to “the full string in practice.”
- Used frequent mini-quizzes — which learners specifically called out as a highlight — to reinforce.
- Built to WCAG 2.2 AA as part of the standard course pipeline.

The Result
A clear, practical introduction to a dry-but-critical topic.
Impact
Learners reported a better ability to identify expenditure purposes and enter ChartFields correctly; the course earned an NPS of 88.
Outcome
Published as part of the PRO3 Fiscal Certification; 118 learners to date.
