A Remediation Playbook For Legacy Storyline Courses

Accessibility Strategy · SOP Design · Articulate Storyline

The team's WCAG 2.2 AA remediation playbook for legacy Articulate Storyline courses — a triage-to-fix methodology that became a go-to team resource.

A Storyline remediation workflow — a broken course is triaged, audited with checklists, and fixed into an accessible, captioned course.Accessibility

The Problem

Older Storyline courses didn't meet — or only partly met — WCAG 2.2 AA, and the team needed a consistent, efficient way to bring them up to standard without rebuilding everything.

Design Story

As the team turned to course remediation, I documented a repeatable method drawn from real fixes: what to triage, what to audit, what to rebuild.

Complexity

Storyline courses fail accessibility in many different ways — drag-and-drop, hover-only interactions, narration-dependent content, fragile custom triggers — and deciding what to fix versus rebuild is a judgment call.

Make the right decision repeatable. Give the team a triage rule, a structured audit, and a clear line between remediate and rebuild — and treat AI as a first-draft accelerator, never the final word.

The Designed Solution

A guide that starts with triage (is this a remediation candidate or a rebuild?), moves into a structured pre-edit audit, and walks through the fixes — focus order, alt text, captions, interaction patterns — including how to use Storyline's AI alt-text and caption tools as a reviewed first draft.

Design Decisions

  • Lead with triage so the team doesn't sink hours into courses that should be rebuilt.
  • Treat AI outputs (alt text, captions) as drafts that require human review for instructional context.
  • Write it as a practical SOP, not a standards lecture.

The Result

A clear, reusable methodology the team applies to legacy courses.

Impact

Standardized how the team approaches remediation and accelerated the work — cited in recommendations as a valuable resource.

Outcome

An adopted remediation playbook, with both a long reference version and a working checklist.
